Health Benefits of Pumpkins

Health Benefits of Pumpkins

The rich orange color of pumpkin is the presence of beta carotene in the vegetable which is necessary for protecting the body against the risk of certain cancers.

This beta carotene has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties which are essential for reducing the risk of lung cancer and lowering the chances of joint inflammation and arthritis.

The little green seeds in pumpkins contain the protective compounds called phytosterols which are responsible for shrinking the prostate, thereby preventing the transformation of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT). High levels of DHT are linked with enlargement of prostate glands.

The high amount of carotenoids in pumpkins help in fighting with the free radicals in the body, thereby preventing premature aging, cardiovascular diseases and other infections.

Pumpkins are rich in Lutein and Zeaxanthin which are required for protecting the eyes against free radical damage and preventing the formation of cataracts and degeneration of eye tissues.

Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are a rich source of protein and phytosterols that help in lowering blood cholesterol levels.

Consuming pumpkin on a regular basis is known for promoting eye health and boosting the immune system, due to the presence of vitamin A in excessive amounts.

Loaded with zinc and potassium, pumpkins are a proven solution for preventing the onset of cardiovascular diseases and hypertension. Besides, they provide bone density support in people suffering from osteoporosis and enhance the reproductive health of both men and women.

Pumpkins are enriched with vitamins A, C and E, and zinc which combines to give you a healthy and glowing skin. Having a cup of pumpkin seeds daily keeps the skin nourished and hydrated, protecting against the appearance of wrinkles.

Pumpkin juice is recommended for ulcers, high acidity and insomnia due to its sedative properties.

Biologists suggest pumpkins to be highly useful for treating hormonal disorders or adolescent behavior, menopause disorder, intestinal parasites and sexual hyper-excitability

Benefits of Grapefruit

Healthy Eating = Healthy You

6 Most Unhealthy Foods

6 of the Most Unhealthy and Potentially Cancer-Causing Foods *source Renegade Health Article
*Processed Meat: Meats preserved by smoking, curing, or salting, or that contain chemical preservatives, are linked to an increased risk of colon cancer. Most are manufactured with a carcinogenic ingredient known as sodium nitrite, used to turn packaged meats a bright red color so they look fresh.

*Soda:

It’s loaded with calories, sugar, and artificial ingredients, and has no nutritional benefit. One can of soda contains the equivalent of ten packets of sugar.

*Microwave Popcorn: Chemicals in the lining of the bag, including perfluoroctanoic acid (PFOA) are part of a class of compounds that may be linked to infertility in humans

*Conventional Apples (and Other “Dirty” Fruits): According to a survey by the Environmental Working Group, apples are the most pesticide-contaminated produce on average, with pesticides showing up on 98 percent of the more than 700 samples tested

*farmed salmon is not only lower in vitamin D than wild-caught, but higher in contaminants, including carcinogens, PCBs, flame retardants, and pesticides including DDT.

*Canned Tomatoes: The lining of most canned foods contains bisphenol-A (BPA), a chemical that acts as an estrogen and disrupts hormonal activity in the body. Studies show that BPA may be linked to heart disease, intestinal damage, and infertility and other reproductive issues

Health Benefits of Turmeric

160 Uses for Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil – An Overview
Offering a myriad of health benefits, coconut oil is affordable, readily available and completely natural. I use it for EVERYTHING. Literally. I buy it in 5 gallon increments and keep it all over my house. I even have some in the car. So here is a little information to inspire you to check out this amazing oil!
Coconut Oil Is:
  • Anti-bacterial (kills bacteria that cause ulcers, throat infections, urinary tract infections, gum diseases, and other bacterial infections)
  • Anti-carcinogenic (coconut oil has antimicrobial properties so it effectively prevents the spread of cancer cells and enhances the immune system)
  • Anti-fungal (kills fungi and yeast that lead to infection)
  • Anti-inflammatory (appears to have a direct effect in suppressing inflammation and repairing tissue, and it may also contribute by inhibiting harmful intestinal microorganisms that cause chronic inflammation.)

  • Anti-microbial/Infection Fighting (the medium-chain fatty acids and monoglycerides found in coconut oil are the same as those in human mother’s milk, and they have extraordinary antimicrobial properties. By disrupting the lipid structures of microbes, they inactivate them. About half of coconut oil consists of lauric acid. Lauric acid, its metabolite monolaurin and other fatty acids in coconut oil are known to protect against infection from bacteria, viruses, yeast, fungi and parasites. While not having any negative effect on beneficial gut bacteria, coconut oil inactivates undesirable microbes.)
  • An Antioxidant (protects against free-radical formation and damage)
  • Anti-parasitic (fights to rid the body of tapeworms, lice and other parasites)
  • Anti-protozoa (kills giardia, a common protozoan infection of the gut)
  • Anti-retroviral (kills HIV and HLTV-1)
  • Anti-viral (kills viruses that cause influenza, herpes, measles, hepatitis C, SARS, AIDS, and other viruses)
  • Infection fighting
  • Has no harmful for discomforting side effects
  • Known to improve nutrient absorption (easily digestible; makes vitamins and minerals more available to the body)
  • Nontoxic to humans and animals
Daily Dosage:
Here is a chart outlining the recommended daily dosage of virgin coconut oil for persons over the age of 12. Coconut oil may be consumed by children under 12 but it is advisable to check with a healthcare practitioner on the proper dosage. Any good naturopath will have the information at the ready. (Starting at 12 months of age, I gave my daughter one teaspoon per day and she weighed about 16 pounds at that time.)
Weight in pounds/kilogramsNumber of tablespoons of coconut oil daily
175+/79+4
150+ /68+3 1/2
125+ / 57+3
100+/ 45+2 1/2
75+ / 34+2
50+ / 23+1 1/2
25+ / 11+1

Type of Coconut Oil to Use:
  • Virgin (unrefined) coconut oil tastes and smells coconutty and is great for cooking and baking where you want that flavor. You can use it for anything but it will impart a coconut taste (mild) and odor (pleasant in my book)! Unrefined coconut oil retains the most nutritional value and is superior to refined oil.
  • Expeller pressed (refined) coconut oil can be used for anything. It does not have a coconutty smell or taste. It is still outstanding to use but does lose some of it’s health properties during the refining process.
  • Food grade should always be used.

Coconut Oil Wonder

Watermelon-White Grape -Rose Petal Juice

Photo: WATERMELON-WHITE GRAPE-ROSE PETAL JUICE

4 Cups Watermelon Chunks (with seeds)
1 Cup Coconut Water
1 Cup White Grapes
2 teaspoons dried rosepetals

Mix watermelon, coconut water and grapes in vitamix. Pour through milk bag to get the juice. Stir in the rose petals.

I use flowers like lavender, hibiscus and roses all the time for culinary purposes. They are great used fresh in salads, dried in chocolates, raw puddings and raw jellies, great for rosewater for a face spray and many other uses. Light-color roses are more sweet in flavor. Darker roses have more aroma and flavor.

You can often find these dried flowers in the bulk spice section of health food stores or online. You can also make them right from your garden, which is what we do!

Here's how:

1. Harvest roses near the peak of their bloom. (make sure they are pesticide free)
2. Rinse petals only (get rid of white part underneath) in cool water.
3. Lay out on the mesh screens of your dehydrator.
4. Dehydrate at 105 overnight.
5. Store whole, or grind in your spice grinder.

Goodness of Brown Rice

Photo: Why Brown Rice is better than White Rice~

Want to lose weight and still eat rice? Just switch to brown rice instead of white. Apart from being more nutritious, it also has fat-burning properties.

What is brown rice? How is it different from white rice?

It is just normal rice but with all the nutrients still intact. The reason brown rice has many more nutrients than regular white rice is due to the fact that brown rice has only th...e outer layer, called the hull(husk), removed while white rice has been refined for convenience removing several nutritious layers—therefore losing all nutrients.
The next time you feel sluggish reach for brown rice. It has several

health benefits:~

Brown rice has more than 80% of your daily value of manganese, which gives you energy from both carbohydrates and proteins.
Manganese also helps synthesize fatty acids, which keeps your nervous system in working order.

The fiber in brown rice produces the best health benefit of all – fat burning! In addition to requiring more energy to break it down, the fiber in brown rice helps satisfy your appetite and therefore decreases your chances of overeating. That is the equation for fat loss – eat less and burn more!

The fiber and selenium found in brown rice can also reduce your risk of many types of cancer, which is a health benefit we could all use. Finally, oils found in brown rice can help lower cholesterol, which according to research, we eat too much of already.

The Humble Garlic

Garlic is one of the most diverse ingredients in the culinary world.

Garlic is featured in many types of cuisine, from Chinese to Italian to Indian. There are more than 600 varieties of garlic, which can be categorized into 17 subgroups. Garlic tastes great and is great for your health. Garlic was seen as having healing powers by the Egyptians and was cherished by the Romans.

Garlic is a way to add flavor to food without adding calories or fat. One clove of garlic has only 4 calories. It's also very low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium. Garlic is a good source of calcium, phosphorus and selenium, Vitamin C, Vitamin B-6 and manganese.

Garlic helps reduce inflammation in the body and lowers blood pressure. It's also loaded with omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, is a natural blood thinner and has a dilating effect on blood vessels.

Garlic has the ability to activate liver enzymes that helps your body flush out toxins. Garlic also holds high amounts of allicin and selenium, two natural compounds that aid in liver cleansing.

I love to take whole bulbs of garlic and bake them until they soften like butter. It is delicious on whole grain bread. I also add fresh garlic to all my stews and bean dishes. When I don't plan to be around anyone for a few days, I blend sprouted garbanzo beans with several cloves of garlic and lemon. Try adding one clove of garlic to your juices

Health Benefits of Tumeric

Health Benefits of Radish

Radish, the well known part of your salad, is a root crop, pungent or sweet in taste with a lot of juice. Radishes can be white, red, purple or black, long cylindrical or round in shape. They are eate...n raw, cooked or pickled. The oil obtained from the seeds of radish is also used. The other parts of radish which are consumed are the leaves, the f
lowers, the pods and the seeds. The scientific name of radish is Raphanus Sativus which belongs to the Brassicaceae family. Radish is also known as Daiken in some parts of the world.

The benefits of radish against certain ailments and on certain body parts are listed below:

Jaundice: Radish is very good for the liver and the stomach and it is a very good detoxifier too, that is, it purifies blood. It is miraculously useful in jaundice as it helps removing bilirubin and also checks its production. It also checks destruction of red blood cells during jaundice by increasing supply of fresh oxygen in the blood. The black radish is more preferred in jaundice. The leaves of radish are also very useful in treatment of jaundice.

Piles: Radish is very rich in roughage, i.e. indigestible carbohydrates. This facilitates digestion, retains water, cures constipation (one of the main causes for piles) and thus gives relief in piles. Being a very good detoxifier, it helps heal up piles fast. Its juice also soothes the digestive and excretory system and this also relieves piles.

Urinary Disorders: Radishes are diurectic in nature, i.e. increase production of urine. Juice of radish also cures inflammation and burning feeling during urinating. It also cleans the kidneys and inhibits infections in kidneys and urinary system. Thus it helps a great deal in curing urinary disorders.

Weight Loss: Radishes are very filling, i.e. fills your stomach and satisfies your hunger easily without giving you many calories, as they are low in digestible carbohydrates, high in roughage and contain a lot of water. It is a very good dietary option for those determined to lose weight.

Cancer: Being a very good detoxifier and rich in vitamin-C, folic and anthocyanins, radish helps cure many types of cancer, particularly those of colon, kidney, intestines, stomach and oral cancer.

Leucoderma: The detoxifying and anti carcinogenic properties of radish make it useful in treatment of Leucoderma. The radish seeds are used in this case. They should be powdered and soaked in vinegar or ginger juice or cows urine and then applied on the white patches. Eating radish also aids treatment of Leucoderma.

Skin Disorders: Vitamin-C, phosphorus, zinc and some members of vitamin-B complex, which are present in radish, are good for skin. The water in it helps maintaining moisture of the skin. Smashed raw radish is a very good cleanser and serves as a very efficient face pack. Due to its disinfectant properties, radish also helps cure skin disorders, such as drying up, rashes, cracks etc. and also refreshes it.
Kidney Disorders: Being diurectic, cleanser and disinfectant, it helps cure many kidney disorders. Its diurectic properties help wash away the toxins accumulated in the kidneys. Cleansing properties clean kidneys up and lessens accumulation of toxins in the blood, thereby decreasing their concentration in the kidneys. Its disinfectant properties protect the kidneys from any infections too. Thus it is good for overall health of the kidneys.

Insect Bites: It has anti pruritic properties and can be used as an effective treatment for insect bites, stings of bees, hornets, wasps etc. Its juice also reduces pain and swelling and soothes the affected area.

Fever: It brings down the body temperature and relieves inflammation due to fever. Drink radish juice mixed with black salt. Being a good disinfectant, it also fights infections which cause fever, thereby helping cure it.

Respiratory Disorders, Bronchitis and Asthma: Radish is an anti congestive, i.e. it relieves congestion of respiratory system including nose, throat, wind-pipe and lungs, due to cold, infection, allergies and other causes. It is a good disinfectant and also rich in vitamins, which protect respiratory system from infections.

Liver&Gallbladder: Radish is especially beneficial for liver and gallbladder functions. It regulates production and flow of bile and bilirubin, acids, enzymes and removes excess bilirubin from the blood, being a good detoxifier. It also contains enzymes like myrosinase, diastase, amylase and esterase. It protects liver and gallbladder from infections and ulcers and soothes them.

Other Benefits: Apart from above benefits, radish is a good appetizer, mouth and breathe freshener, laxative, regulates metabolism, improves blood circulation, is a good treatment for headache, acidity, constipation, nausea, obesity, sore throat, whooping cough, gastric problems, gallbladder stones, dyspepsia etc.

Benefits of kidney beans

Health Benefits Of Eating Kidney Beans ~

• Being a major source of protein, kidney beans provide all the eight basic forms of amino acids or the eight essential amino acids. These amino acids act against a number of diseases and are important to maintain a healthy immune system. It is estimated that a single cup of uncooked beans provides around 85% of the daily protein requirement.

• Certain na
tural antioxidants (anthocyanins) present in these beans also have a number of beneficial health effects. Studies have revealed that the darker the color of the skin of the beans, the higher these antioxidants.

• The soluble fiber present in the kidney bean regulates the blood glucose absorption from the body. This is done by forming a gel-like substance, by absorbing water from the intestines. This gel-like substance slows down the metabolism of carbohydrates in the body, thereby regulating the blood sugar levels and preventing their sudden elevation after meals. Hence, it is essential for diabetics (insulin resistance) to consume kidney beans on a regular basis.

• The dietary fiber in these beans also helps lower the blood cholesterol levels in the body. This is achieved by the bonding of the fiber with the bile acids in the intestines. As the bile acids are used for the synthesis of cholesterol, their bonding with the dietary fibers results in lesser availability of the acids for the synthesis of cholesterol. Hence, the risk of certain diseases, like stroke, high blood pressure and coronary heart disease, is reduced to a considerable extent.

• A high source of certain nutrients involved in the process of detoxification, kidney beans reduce the risk of a number of inflammatory, degenerative and cardiovascular diseases and also help promote and maintain optimal health.

• As these beans prove to be a high source of iron, their regular intake helps in the process of respiration at the cellular level, by synthesizing hemoglobin to aid in the carriage of oxygen to the cells.

• Kidney beans also have considerable amount of the mineral molybdenum, which helps in the detoxification of sulfites from the blood.

• The copper present in these beans aids in the reduction of inflammatory conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA). They also act as an important factor in promoting certain enzymatic activity that is required to maintain the normal elastic properties of ligaments, joints and blood vessels.

• The magnesium in kidney beans helps relieve fatigue by relaxing the muscles, nerves and blood vessels. This, in turn, prevents the adverse effects of conditions like asthma, muscle soreness, and migraine headaches.

• A prime effect of consuming kidney bean is prevention of conditions like stroke, heart attack and PVD (Peripheral Vascular Disease). This is done with the help of folic acid present in the plant. The folic acid lowers the levels of homocysteine (a potentially dangerous molecule), which is produced as a result of the metabolic process of methylation. Elevated levels of this molecule lead to the above mentioned harmful and life-threatening conditions.

Saving Time with Smoothies

Here's a great time saving tip for smoothie lovers:

Mix up a batch of your favorite smoothie, divide mixture between 12 medium sized muffin cups, and place trays in freezer. Freeze about 4 hours until solid. Un-mold the smoothie cups, plac

e them in an airtight container, and return to the freezer until you're ready to use them. Perfect for busy mornings.

Note: If you don't have silicon muffin cups, and have trouble unmolding the frozen cups, place the bottom of the muffin tin in warm water for few seconds, but make sure not to thaw the contents.

When ready to drink your smoothie, place 1 cup coconut or regular water and 2 smoothie cups into a blender container and blend until smooth.

Here's a mango smoothie recipe to try out!
1 cup coconut water
2 ripe mangos, cubed
1/2 cup flaked dry coconut
1/2 cup raw cashews
2 tablespoons sweetener (maple syrup tastes great)
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon

Place all of the ingredients in a blender container in the order listed and blend until smooth.

1 Cup Coconut Meat
1/4 cup water (but go sparingly, coconut meat texture varies)
1 TBSP Herbs de Provence
2 TBSP Fresh Dill
2 TBSP Fresh Parsley
1/2 teaspoon Sea Salt

DIRECTIONS:
Mix all ingredients in vitamix or blender. Add water SLOWLY or it will be too runny. You want it to be the consistency of a think-like pancake batter that pours nicely. Pour onto teflex sheets until desired size and dehydrate at 105 for about 1 hour before flipping them over. Then another hour or so on the other side. You need to check these, because depending on the humidity in your location, they may take longer. You don't want them to be so hard that they will be unable to roll.
